Seven Month Achievements

I'm 7 months!

My sweet Scarlett is seven months and boy is her little personality starting to shine through. As each month passes, she learns more and more and regardless of seeing these milestones with Penelope, it's just as exhilarating to see Scarlett accomplish them as they were when Penelope did.

Scarlett now rolls from front to back and back to front but only over her right shoulder. She woke us up a few times in the middle night to inform us that she was stuck and needed assistance getting back to her original position, on her back. I've figured out that if I place her in the top corner of the crib, she's able to roll over her shoulder but then use her hands to push her self back to her desired position. But as of the past  two mornings when I got her up, she was sleeping so contently on her belly! Could she potentially be like her mommy, a belly sleeper?! Time will tell!

She's also quite the kicker. She loves splashing with her legs at bath time which often results in mommy getting completely soaked once bath is over. And not only does she express herself with those kicking legs, but now she's found her voice! She is such a squealing girl! I love how she expresses her excitement, kicking and squealing loud enough so the whole world can hear her.

I remember when we first brought Scarlett home and how once the adrenaline wore off, I didn't know how I was going to survive, taking care of Penelope and a new born. Now I can't imagine my life before Scarlett and although there are still many tiresome days,  I remind myself that the next day is a new day and that she is only this young for so long and before I know it, I won't be nursing her any longer, she won't want me to hold her, and she won't need me to feed her (and she'll be saying "I'll do it mommy, I'll do it mommy" just like her sister!).

I never want to take for granted how blessed and fortunate we are to have these two beautiful, healthy baby girls that have changed and bettered my life. I reflect back when I was pregnant with Scarlett and how I couldn't imagine the heart having the capacity to love another child (I know NOW that was the most RIDICULOUS thing EVER), and then I met Scarlett on September 29 and I knew I'd fallen head over heels in love all over again. The fulfillment Scarlett has given me is an indescribable one and in five months she'll be a year. She is my sweet spunk a munk as I call her and I will continue to embrace the days of holding her on my hip, the contagious laughter she gives me when I grab her chunky munky thighs, and the giggling with her gummy grin when we dance to Adele. These are the memories we are making, these are the stories I'll  share with her one day. She is my beloved baby girl, Penelope's treasured sister, and daddy's little girl.

Thrify Finds

I've been so fortunate lately to find some thrifty finds that I'm actually up to my neck with projects and not to mention that our garage is  no longer a place to store vehicles but a work shack for yours truly.  Here are a few of my fab finds!

These colorful baskets for $1.07 each at GoodWill are a great contribution to the room. Cheap organization and bright colors made these a no brainer purchase!

Here is where our broom and swiffer (isn't pictured) used to be stored.

And then after a superb $1.00 find at GoodWill, this is where they now reside. Oh blissful organization!

This retro credenza that is now under our television. A magnificent find at Antique Alley. A solid wood piece that was priced at $45 and talked down to $35. LOVE IT!
I found these twin chairs that I can't wait to makeover. I'm not certain if they'll stay at their current location but they do look pretty nice there. I plan on refinishing them in an antique white and recovering the seats. These twins were $8.00 for both at a garage sale! What a steal!!

A Motherhood Pact

Lately I've been thinking that there should be a secret pact amongst mothers that could go something like this:
I, (fill in the blank with your name), promise not to pass judgement, criticize, or turn my nose up towards any mother in regards to how she sees fit to raise her child. I will understand, and/or be supportive, that motherhood is a very difficult (but rewarding!) role and that as a mother, I should realize that I may not ALWAYS (and sometimes NEVER) see eye to eye with how one chooses to bring up their child (like how Alicia Silverstone chooses to feed her child in a birdlike manner, which who is to say, I wouldn't do the same thing to prevent my child from choking?), but that most mothers (key word here being MOST), are making their choices thoughtfully and in the best interest of their child.

If you ask me today if I'm a confidant mother, I'd say more times than not, yes, yes I am. But if you  asked me that same question three years ago, I would have given you a different response.

When I first found out I was pregnant with Penelope, I did everything that most first time mommies do, I immediately signed up for weekly emails to learn the development of my growing miracle, I purchased What To Expect When Expecting, obsessively posted and responded to mommy message boards, and subscribed to parenting magazines. I knew there wasn't a manual to being the perfect parent, but I wanted to be equipped with as much knowledge as I could get my hands on.

Once Penelope arrived, I was consumed with whether or not I was making the right choices for my new baby girl.  I was working at the time and to say I was tired would be the understatement of the year. I drank coffee in order to get through my day and all the while I continued to nurse. Today, I continue to drink a few cups so that I can  be energized enough to keep up with a six month old and a two year old. Yet literature tells me that drinking coffee and nursing isn't necessarily the best thing for my baby and to refrain or limit  caffeine intake. Emerald without coffee is like a car without fuel, it can't get anywhere and it's useless! If I didn't start my day without coffee, I would probably end up  bedridden with bed bugs. I need my FUEL! So unfortunately, cutting caffeine from my diet is not an option, and I thank God I never saw Penelope, nor seen,  Scarlett  nervously twitch from caffeine withdrawal.

With both my girls, I made the  decision to make  their baby food. Everywhere I read, from magazines to parenting websites, the word ORGANIC pops up. During the time I was making baby food for Penelope, we were attempting to pay everything off so I could stay at home. As a result, our grocery budget was limited. Now that we've accomplished the goal of me staying at home, we're still on a  small budget and the price of organic food just doesn't fit into that budget. Does that make me a bad mom?

When Penelope was born, I had exactly six weeks with her before I started back teaching. Lack of sleep quickly helped me make the decision to cosleep with our baby girl. This beautiful sleeping arrangement (beautiful because I actually got some REM cycles in!) lasted until she was a year old. While many believe that co sleeping is hazardous and unsafe, for Brandon and I, it was the right choice. I was able to sleep better knowing she was right beside me (and I loved rolling over to see that precious face!) and I didn't have to get up and down to feed her which allowed me more sleep. Selfish choice, yes, however, it aided me in keeping my sanity by keeping me well rested!

In the beginning, I constantly questioned whether I was making the right choices and if my daughter was going to die from the pesticide ridden applesauce I fed her from the hazardous BPA bowl I warmed it up in.
But the more I spoke to other moms, the more I read from mommy message boards (thank God for these!) it turns out that there are other mothers who make the exact same choices I do and they are just as great of a mother as the next (and their children seem to be doing completely fine!)  No organics fruit and vegetables, caffeine drinking while nursing, co sleeping, and reheated foods in plastic bowls (and not to mention all the other questionable choices I've made!) doesn't constitute an award for worse mother.

There are so many other choices I've made for my girls that could easily be frowned upon, but at the end of the day, they are the decisions I've made and I am happy with. Mothers are boggled down everyday, second to second, minute to minute with the choices to make for their children. If we are consumed with how others perceive these choices, it can be truly exhausting. I am FINALLY getting to the point where I am comfortable in my skin. I feel I can be honest about the choices I make and not fear how others perceive me. Don't get me wrong, there are still times I agonize whether or not someone will question if I'm a good mother or if the choices are the right ones, but I know that my girls are happy, safe, protected and overwhelmingly loved, and so at the end of the day, that must mean  I'm doing something right!

The wonderful part of parenting is that we all make mistakes. We do our best, learn from the mistakes, and apply the knowledge we've learned the next time. Everyday, I choose to do what works for my family, which in the end makes my parenting choices unique to me.

As women, we are united through this beautiful journey of motherhood. It isn't always the easiest role but it certainly is the most blessed and fulfilling one. Showing compassion and understanding for one another can definitely aid in making this sleep deprived and chaotic calling a tiny bit easier because the one thing we CAN agree on, is that our lives are forever changed, and we wouldn't have it...

Distressed Furniture Stereotypes Broken

Distressed furniture is stunning! I love how versatile it is, I love how it MAKES a room and, I love how much personality it encompasses. However, I feel that distressed furniture is stereotyped for being only shabby chic. I am here to dispute that notion and tell you that distressed furniture can be anything you want it to be.

Distressed furniture is any style you make it. It's modern, it's country cottage, it's coastal and nautical, and it's eclectic. Distressed furniture can be placed in any room and conform to any style you want it to be. Here are two pictures of what many associate with distressed furniture and notice how the pieces are accessorized. Floral prints and pastels combined with the furniture give it the shabby chic style.

Here we see a black distressed dresser which gives the appearance of a bold look and with its black hue, anchors a room. This is a far cry from shabby chic's pastels and florals!

Another way to utilize distressed furniture is in an eclectic setting. I love this lovely mint green cabinet in more of a diverse styled room. The chalkboard above it with the log cabinish walls give this piece of furniture an interesting and appealing look.

This over sized hutch is beautiful. It's eclectic in how they styled it, the large Romanesque head on top, the vintage brown suitcases on the bottom, and the the lovely antique dishes. Again, this hutch doesn't scream shabby chic, and could easily be found in a New England colonial home near the coast (not that I've ever been to New England, but I have seen pictures in magazines and seen homes on HGTV, perhaps one day I'll visit there!). It's soft, yet heavy, and has such character.

And lastly, here is another example which demonstrates that it's all in how we accessorize. With the right pieces, antique books, feathers and metallics, a chippy distressed dresser can evoke a touch of masculinity and eclecticism.

I hope any preconceived notions you may have had of distressed furniture has gone out the window. Perhaps you've gone as far as wanting to incorporate your very own distressed piece in your own home. If you have a piece that needs a facelift, why not give it a good 'ol paint job and sand it down to give it a captivating look!

Much like the little black dress that every woman should have hanging in her closet, I too believe every home owner should have at least one intriguing distressed piece in their home (or like me SEVERAL!).

This Week's Dinner Line Up

Last week was a great week for newly tested recipes. The baked sweet and sour chicken was a successful dinner entree and will be placed on the 'make again' dinner list. I didn't make the fried rice that the blog suggests to serve it with, but instead, served it with white rice. Overall, I give this dish two thumbs up!

I also made eggplant sticks that I ended up eating all on my own. Yes, I am an eggplantaholic. I gave two sticks to Penelope that she enjoyed dipping in her ranch while I furiously ate the rest, dipping mine in marinara sauce. If you are an egg plant lover, or even if you aren't, I HIGHLY recommend trying this recipe and beware, you may end up eating an entire eggplant by yourself!

Baked Eggplant Sticks

I'm ecstatic to have my family coming into town this weekend and I will definitely be making these delicious sticks for them. I've already placed on my grocery list, three eggplants, so that there will be enough for them to eat as well.

A couple weeks ago, I tested out a new cinnamon roll recipe. I looooooove me some Pioneer Woman cinnamon rolls. However, the prep time is a tad bit lengthy (but definitely worth the effort!) so I went to my bff Pinterest in search of a different recipe. I found this one hour cinnamon rolls recipe and I do believe I'll be utilizing this recipe more often. They were so delish and a lot quicker to make than some others I have tried. Before I could get a picture of the sweet yummy goodness, Penelope had brought over a chair, climbed right up to the counter, and stole a hot one. Hence, the reason the pan is missing one!

one hour cinnamon rolls

This is them prior to being iced. I did make the icing that went with them but in my opinion, not being a sweet addict, I preferred mine without the icing. Either way though, these were heaven!

Here is this week's dinner lineup!

Monday: I won a free Dominos artisan pizza, holla back! I love the word FREE! And hubby was also ecstatic since he is a former employee from back in the good 'ol college days. Anytime he can have Dominos, he is in pure bliss! We ate the Chicken and Bacon Carbonara, sooo good!
Tuesday: Chick-Fuh-Lay Nuggets, sliced cantaloupe, and baked Parmesan asparagus fries
Wednesday: Ground turkey enchiladas, slow cooked pinto beans, and rice
Thursday: Grilled pork chops, broccoli, mashed potatoes, and sliced melon
Friday: Homemade Pepperoni Pizza, fresh fruit, and sliced cucumbers in italian dressing
Saturday: MY FAMILY IS IN TOWN! Brown Sugar and Balsamic Glazed Pork Loin (last week's pork loin was apparently not so good, I opened it and it had an AWFUL smell !), baked eggplant sticks, baked potatoes and sweet potatoes, salad with Copycat Olive Garden Dressing and since the family will be here I'm doing a yummy dessert, Chocolate Banana Pudding
Sunday: Vegetable Soup, fresh fruit, salad with Copycat Olive Garden Dressing

Happy Eatings!

DIY Babyfood

I remember before Penelope was born, I read several articles about preparing you own baby food. At first the phrase DIY baby food seemed liked a daunting task, as I was still teaching, trying to be a wife, mother, and juggle all those other lovely roles. However, the more I read, the more I learned. Not only is making your own baby food more economically friendly on your wallet, but it isn't as difficult as one would think, AND it offers endless amount of varieties for your little one that you can't buy off the shelf. I decided to give it a shot and after six months of making Penelope's baby food, I found it to be significantly easier than I had previously thought and quite enjoyable!

As Scarlett's six month birthday approached, I was elated to break out the ice cube trays and food processor. My excitement actually got the best of me and instead of waiting till she turned six months, I started at five and a half months. Brandon assured me that he nothing bad would happen if I started her on baby food two weeks before she was six months. So at five and a half months, Miss Scarlett become a baby food eating monster! She loves eating and I've had so much trying new flavors on her. In the beginning of the process, I was certain she was going to be just like her daddy and be a finicky eater, but as time has passed, she is proving to have a very good palate!

DIY baby food is extremely easy and if I ever have a question or I'm doubting whether something can be frozen or not, I can google it or refer to my pinterest babyfood board. I also have a great baby food cook book I can refer to. There are plenty of foods that you can either mash up or throw in the food processor without cooking such as: bananas, avocados, ripe peaches, mangoes, papaya, melons, and I"m sure there are more but these are the ones I've experimented with so far.

Here are a few pictures of the baby food I've made for my Scarlett:

pureed cantaloupe, one of her faves!
scoop it out and throw in food processor, easy peasy!

Pureed Zucchini
peel skin off, slice it, boil it for about five minutes, strain it, and then puree!

Sweet Potato
bake it oven at 375 for about 30 min or soft, scoop out the yummy inside, puree and FREEZE!

Applesauce
skin apples, slice and core them, boil them in a large pot with a cinnamon stick
for about ten minutes or until soft, strain the apples, puree and freeze!

(if too thick you can use some of the water from the pot you cooked them in)

Carrots
slice carrots, cut them up, boil them, drain water, and puree,
if too thick add some of the water you boiled them in and then freeze!

There are two here: blueberry, pear, banana &
cauliflower and tomato au gratin

for the fruit one, add pears and blueberries (I used 2 pears, a handful of blueberries)in a skillet and simmer for about five minutes, throw in processor with one slice banana, puree and freeze!
Cauliflower baby food
I bought frozen cauliflower and threw half the bag into boiling water and cooked it until soft, while that was cooking, I sauteed two sliced and seeded tomatoes in two tablespoons of butter until they were soft and then took skillet off of stove and added 1/4 c. of cheese and stirred it until cheese was completely melted, added that combination with the strained cauliflower into food processor, pureed, and froze!

I've also given her avocados, which I recently read on a blog that it can be frozen in the trays if you decide to puree them and add bit of water to create a smoother puree. I've always just mashed mine up and eaten the other half.

More combos I've tried:
mango and banana (freezes)
zucchini, potato, carrot, and a small amount of chicken (freezes)
carrots and zucchini
squash and zucchini
apples and sweet potato

After you've frozen your purees, store them in freezer bags. I always label my bags with the date and flavor. I've read purees last around six months in the freezer, however I never cook enough for it to be stored in the freezer for that long.

I hope I've proven that making your own baby food isn't as intimidating as it sounds. It's really exciting to experiment with different fruits and veggies and watch my Scarlett's reaction to new purees. There are a LOAD of websites and literature that can help make this an easy peasy and pleasurable experience!

Here's to happy pureeing!

This Week's Dinner Line Up

When all else fails, turn to backup plan, frozen pizza!

As always, last week didn't go as planned. Wednesday night, as I started to prepare dinner, I pulled out my kitchen aid to start my diy hamburger buns. As I went to push on my paddle attachment, I realized it wouldn't go on. I pushed and pushed and when the sweat started pouring from my forehead and I realized I wasn't going to get it on, I threw in the towel and realized we'd be going with option B for dinner, Mr. DiGiornos. I am not afraid to admit that when stuff hits the fan, and doesn't go according to plan, I go to either a frozen pizza, or Tyson chicken nuggets. Those two items are always in the freezer for those 'just in case' evenings, like Wednesday night. When Brandon arrived home, I had him take a look at it. He too tried with no avail and even broke out the hammer. His failed attempts left him throwing away the attachment and reassuring me that we'd have to invest in another one. Great! I rarely use the other two attachments yet, those are the ones that still hook on completely fine. Well I guess I'll be looking up attachments on amazon and keeping my phalanges crossed that I find an amazing deal!

Here is this week's dinner lineup:

Monday: Speaking of pizza, it looks like tonight's cuisine is pizza. I defrosted a pizza dough thinking I'd use it Saturday when the family came over, however I didn't. Now I need to use it or it'll go to waste. So Pepperoni pizza it is tonight, salad with CopyCat Olive Garden Dressing (I still have some in a jar I made a week ago, this dressing is DELICIOUS!) and sliced strawberries
Tuesday: Brown Sugar and Balsamic Glazed Pork Loin, baked potato, (sweet potato for Penelope and I!), baked zucchini sticks, and sliced kiwi and mango
Wednesday: Baked Sweet and Sour Chicken with white rice and fruit salad
Thursday: Glazed Pork Chops, Baked Parmesan Asparagus Fries, fresh fruit
Friday: Bean and Cheese Nachos and cantaloupe
Saturday:Chicken nuggets, Baked Eggplant Sticks, and fruit salad
Sunday: Vegetable chicken soup
